Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: this combination product contains aspirin, which already thins the blood a bit by keeping platelets from clumping. In lab studies, carrageenan has shown some blood-thinning activity of its own. Put those two together, and the theory is they could nudge your bleeding risk a little higher. Things to watch for would be easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or stomach upset and dark stools (a known concern with aspirin).

That said, this is purely theoretical. It has only been seen in test tubes, never reported in people, and ordinary carrageenan in foods like dairy and plant milks is very unlikely to matter. If you're taking a concentrated carrageenan supplement, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

“Anacin with Codeine combines aspirin, caffeine, and codeine, and each of the three picks up its own supplement problems, so this is a list worth real caution. Just over half of the 398 ingredients here, 202 of them, can add to aspirin's blood-thinning action and raise bleeding risk.”

About Carrageenan

What is Carrageenan?

  • Food thickener and stabilizer
  • Digestive complaints (traditional use)
  • Cough and sore throat (traditional use)
  • Laxative or bowel-related uses
  • Antiviral (laboratory interest)

Carrageenan is a fiber-like substance taken from red seaweed and is mostly used as a thickener and gelling agent in foods. There is little solid human evidence supporting it as a health supplement, and some forms (especially degraded carrageenan) have raised digestive and inflammation concerns, so it should not be relied on to treat any condition.
