Cassia Cinnamon and Ethinyl Estradiol, Norgestrel

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Ethinyl Estradiol, Norgestrel

Ethinyl Estradiol, Norgestrel falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Cassia Cinnamon interacts with.

Theoretically, large doses of cassia cinnamon might cause additive effects when used with hepatotoxic drugs.
There is some concern that ingesting large amounts of cassia cinnamon for an extended duration might cause hepatotoxicity in some people. Cassia cinnamon contains coumarin, which can cause hepatotoxicity in animal models. In humans, very high doses of coumarin from 50-7000 mg/day can result in hepatotoxicity that resolves when coumarin use is discontinued. Lower amounts might also cause liver problems in sensitive people, such as those with liver disease or those taking potentially hepatotoxic agents.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with your birth control pill (the ethinyl estradiol and norgestrel combo): the worry isn't about how cassia cinnamon changes the hormones themselves. It's a liver concern. Birth control pills are processed by the liver and, in rare cases, can be hard on it. Cassia cinnamon contains a natural compound called coumarin, and taking large supplement doses for a long time may stress the liver too. Stacking two things that lean on the liver could, in theory, add up.

This is theoretical, based on how these work, not proven harm. Sprinkling cinnamon on your oatmeal is no problem. The caution is for concentrated, high-dose cassia supplements taken daily. If you go that route, or notice yellowing skin, dark urine, or belly pain, check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ethinyl Estradiol, Norgestrel page

“With a birth control pill like ethinyl estradiol and norgestrel (Ovral, Lo/Ovral, Cryselle, Low-Ogestrel), a supplement interaction can mean an unplanned pregnancy rather than just a side effect, so the six major-rated entries among the 239 on this page deserve real attention before the rest. About Cassia Cinnamon

What is Cassia Cinnamon?

Cassia Cinnamon
  • Blood sugar support
  • Digestive upset
  • Antioxidant support
  • Flavoring and culinary use
  • Antimicrobial

Cassia cinnamon is the common, inexpensive cinnamon used in cooking, and it is also taken as a supplement, most often for blood sugar support. The evidence for its health benefits is mixed and far from proven, and because cassia is naturally high in coumarin, taking large amounts regularly may stress the liver. Use food amounts freely, but talk with a pharmacist or doctor before using high-dose supplements.
