Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Pravastatin Sodium
Pravastatin Sodium falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Cassia Cinnamon interacts with.
There is some concern that ingesting large amounts of cassia cinnamon for an extended duration might cause hepatotoxicity in some people. Cassia cinnamon contains coumarin, which can cause hepatotoxicity in animal models. In humans, very high doses of coumarin from 50-7000 mg/day can result in hepatotoxicity that resolves when coumarin use is discontinued. Lower amounts might also cause liver problems in sensitive people, such as those with liver disease or those taking potentially hepatotoxic agents.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: this isn't about cassia cinnamon changing how pravastatin works in your body. It's about both of them potentially leaning on your liver at the same time. Statins like pravastatin can occasionally raise liver enzymes, and cassia cinnamon contains coumarin, which in very large, regular doses has been linked to liver stress. Stack the two and the theoretical worry is a little extra burden on the liver.
The good news: this is theoretical, based on how these compounds behave, not on real-world reports with pravastatin. Sprinkling cinnamon on your oatmeal is no concern. The caution is really for daily high-dose supplements over a long stretch. If you take those, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on your liver numbers.

About Cassia Cinnamon
What is Cassia Cinnamon?
- Blood sugar support
- Digestive upset
- Antioxidant support
- Flavoring and culinary use
- Antimicrobial
Cassia cinnamon is the common, inexpensive cinnamon used in cooking, and it is also taken as a supplement, most often for blood sugar support. The evidence for its health benefits is mixed and far from proven, and because cassia is naturally high in coumarin, taking large amounts regularly may stress the liver. Use food amounts freely, but talk with a pharmacist or doctor before using high-dose supplements.
About Pravastatin
What Is Pravastatin Used For?
Brand name: Pravachol
Pravastatin Sodium tablets are used alongside a cholesterol-lowering diet to treat high LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol), high triglycerides (blood fats), and abnormal cholesterol levels. They are approved for adults and for children ages 8 and older with a hereditary form of high cholesterol called heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH).
In people without known heart disease, pravastatin helps reduce the risk of heart attack and cardiovascular death. In people who already have coronary heart disease (CHD), it is used to reduce the risk of heart attack, coronary death, stroke, transient ischemic attack (TIA), and procedures to restore blood flow to the heart — and to slow the buildup of plaque in the arteries.
