Celery and Ethinyl estradiol, Levonogestrel

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Ethinyl estradiol, Levonogestrel

Ethinyl estradiol, Levonogestrel falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Celery interacts with.

Theoretically, celery might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
In vitro and animal research suggests that constituents of celery can inhibit CYP1A2. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with your birth control pill (Lybrel, which combines ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel) and celery. Some of the plant compounds in celery have, in lab dishes and animal studies, slowed down an enzyme called CYP1A2. Estrogen in your pill is partly handled by this enzyme, so in theory, blocking it could let estrogen levels drift a little higher, which might mean more of the usual estrogen-type side effects like nausea, breast tenderness, bloating, or mood changes.

I want to be honest, though: this has never actually been seen in people, and eating celery as food almost certainly won't matter. Concentrated celery seed extract or oil is where I'd be a touch more thoughtful. If you take those daily, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

About Celery

What is Celery?

Celery
  • High blood pressure
  • Fluid retention (diuretic)
  • Joint pain and inflammation
  • Anxiety and sleep
  • Digestive support

Celery is a common vegetable that is also taken as a seed extract or oil supplement, mainly for blood pressure, fluid retention, and joint discomfort. Human evidence for these supplement uses is limited and mostly preliminary, so it should not replace proven treatments. Celery is generally safe as food, but concentrated supplements and possible allergic reactions warrant caution.
