Celery + Flutamide
Flutamide brand names: Eulexin, Euflex.
Flutamide falls into 2 drug categories that Celery can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, celery might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Celery interacts with whole categories of medication. Flutamide falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Celery in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES
1 of 2Why this applies to Flutamide
Flutamide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Celery interacts with.
In vitro and animal research suggests that constituents of celery can inhibit CYP1A2. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for flutamide. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP1A2 to help process this medicine. In test tube and animal studies, compounds in celery seem to slow that same enzyme down a bit. If that happened in people, flutamide could clear out a little slower and build up, which in theory might raise the chance of side effects like nausea, diarrhea, or liver irritation (flutamide already needs liver monitoring).
The important part: this is theoretical and has not actually been shown in humans. Eating celery as a normal food is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated celery seed extracts or oils are the bigger question mark. If you take those, just mention it to your oncology team or pharmacist so they can keep an eye on your liver labs.

PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS
2 of 2Flutamide also falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS.
Laboratory research shows that celery contains photosensitizing agents such as phenols and psoralens.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for celery and your Flutamide. This isn't about how your body breaks the drug down. Instead, both can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Flutamide itself is known to occasionally cause sun-related skin reactions, and celery contains natural plant compounds (psoralens) that can do the same thing. Put them together and, in theory, you might sunburn a little more easily.
I'll be honest with you: this is a minor, mostly theoretical concern based on weak, anecdotal evidence, and eating celery as food is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated celery seed supplements are where you'd want a bit more caution. Just use good sunscreen and cover up outdoors, and run any new supplement by your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Flutamide page
“A man taking flutamide (Eulexin) to block testosterone during prostate cancer treatment cannot afford big swings in the drug's level, and most of the 189 supplements on this page are capable of causing exactly that. The bulk of them work through the liver enzyme CYP3A4, which breaks flutamide down.”

About Celery
What is Celery?
- High blood pressure
- Fluid retention (diuretic)
- Joint pain and inflammation
- Anxiety and sleep
- Digestive support
Celery is a common vegetable that is also taken as a seed extract or oil supplement, mainly for blood pressure, fluid retention, and joint discomfort. Human evidence for these supplement uses is limited and mostly preliminary, so it should not replace proven treatments. Celery is generally safe as food, but concentrated supplements and possible allergic reactions warrant caution.
About Flutamide
What Is Flutamide Used For?
Brand names: Eulexin, Euflex
Flutamide treats prostate cancer in men. Eulexin capsules are used with an LHRH-agonist (a type of hormone-lowering therapy) for locally confined Stage B2-C and Stage D2 metastatic (spread) prostate cancer.
For Stage B2-C disease, Eulexin and the goserelin acetate implant start eight weeks before radiation therapy and continue during it. For Stage D2 disease, Eulexin starts with the LHRH-agonist and continues until the cancer progresses.
