Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS
Why this applies to Thiothixene
Thiothixene falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Celery interacts with.
Laboratory research shows that celery contains photosensitizing agents such as phenols and psoralens.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the deal with celery and thiothixene (Navane). This isn't about how your body breaks the medicine down. Instead, both can make your skin a bit more sensitive to sunlight. Thiothixene, like many older antipsychotics, can cause photosensitivity, meaning you may sunburn faster than usual. Concentrated celery supplements contain natural compounds called psoralens that can do the same thing, so taking them together might add up.
To be honest, this is a minor, theoretical concern based mostly on lab work and scattered reports, not strong human studies. Eating celery as food is very unlikely to matter. If you use celery seed extract or oil, just be smart about sun: wear sunscreen, cover up, and check with your pharmacist if you notice easy burning.

This page covers Celery only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Thiothixene page lists 51 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.
The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Indian Snakeroot (major), Rauvolfia Vomitoria (major), Alfalfa (moderate) and Angelica Archangelica (moderate).
By severity: 3 major · 37 moderate · 11 minor.
From our pharmacist’s overview on the Thiothixene page
“Activated charcoal is the entry to know first with thiothixene (Navane). It can bind the drug in the gut and carry it out of the body, and for an antipsychotic controlling psychotic symptoms, a dose that quietly disappears risks relapse.”

About Celery
What is Celery?
- High blood pressure
- Fluid retention (diuretic)
- Joint pain and inflammation
- Anxiety and sleep
- Digestive support
Celery is a common vegetable that is also taken as a seed extract or oil supplement, mainly for blood pressure, fluid retention, and joint discomfort. Human evidence for these supplement uses is limited and mostly preliminary, so it should not replace proven treatments. Celery is generally safe as food, but concentrated supplements and possible allergic reactions warrant caution.
About Thiothixene
