Ceylon Cinnamon and Nimodipine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Nimodipine

Nimodipine falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Ceylon Cinnamon interacts with.

Theoretically, Ceylon cinnamon might have additive effects with antihypertensive drugs and increase the risk of hypotension.
Animal research shows that Ceylon cinnamon extract has vasorelaxant properties and reduces blood pressure in rat models of hypertension, possibly via inhibition of calcium influx through L-type voltage-sensitive channels.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: nimodipine is a calcium channel blocker, so it already works by relaxing blood vessels and easing pressure. Interestingly, lab and animal studies hint that Ceylon cinnamon may act in a similar way, possibly nudging those same calcium channels. So in theory, the two together could lower your blood pressure a bit more than nimodipine alone, which might leave you feeling lightheaded, dizzy, or faint, especially when you stand up quickly.

Now, the honest part: this concern comes only from rat studies, not from people, so it's pretty theoretical. A sprinkle of cinnamon on your oatmeal is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated cinnamon capsules are the bigger question. Since nimodipine is used after a serious brain bleed, please loop in your doctor or pharmacist before adding any supplement.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Nimodipine page

“Nimodipine (Nimotop, Nymalize) is given after bleeding around the brain to stop blood vessels from clamping down, and the supplement interactions on file earn real caution, not a shrug. Of the 227 ingredients listed, most either interfere with CYP3A4, the liver enzyme that clears nimodipine, or lower blood pressure on their own and sta…”

About Ceylon Cinnamon

What is Ceylon Cinnamon?

Ceylon Cinnamon
  • Blood sugar support
  • High cholesterol
  • Indigestion and gas
  • Antimicrobial
  • General flavoring and culinary use

Ceylon cinnamon is the so-called 'true' cinnamon, valued as a spice and used in traditional medicine for blood sugar, cholesterol, and digestion. Evidence for most health benefits is limited and mixed, but as a food it is generally safe and contains far less coumarin than common cassia cinnamon. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated supplements, especially if you have a health condition or take medications.

About Nimodipine

What Is Nimodipine Used For?

Brand names: Nimotop, Nymalize

Nimodipine — available as capsules and oral solution — is used to improve neurological outcomes after a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), a type of bleeding that occurs around the brain when an intracranial berry aneurysm ruptures. It works to reduce the incidence and severity of ischemic deficits (areas of the brain damaged by reduced blood flow) that can follow this kind of bleed.

This use applies across nimodipine capsules, nimodipine oral solution, and Nymalize oral solution. It is indicated for adult patients regardless of how severe their neurological condition is at the time treatment begins.
