Ceylon Cinnamon and Metoprolol

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Metoprolol

Metoprolol falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Ceylon Cinnamon interacts with.

Theoretically, Ceylon cinnamon might have additive effects with antihypertensive drugs and increase the risk of hypotension.
Animal research shows that Ceylon cinnamon extract has vasorelaxant properties and reduces blood pressure in rat models of hypertension, possibly via inhibition of calcium influx through L-type voltage-sensitive channels.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: metoprolol already lowers your blood pressure and slows your heart rate. Ceylon cinnamon, at least in lab and animal studies, seems to relax blood vessels and nudge blood pressure down too. Put them together and there's a theoretical chance the effects could stack, pushing your numbers lower than expected.

If that happened, you might notice dizziness, lightheadedness, unusual tiredness, or feeling faint when you stand up. I want to stress this is based on weak evidence (animal research), not human studies, so the risk is low. A sprinkle of cinnamon on your oatmeal almost certainly won't matter. Concentrated cinnamon supplements are the bigger question. If you'd like to take those daily, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

“With metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), a beta-blocker for high blood pressure and heart problems, these interactions deserve genuine care, starting with the five rated major. Most entries pull blood pressure one way or the other: many supplements add to metoprolol's lowering effect and can drop pressure too far, while a few, tyramine…”

About Ceylon Cinnamon

What is Ceylon Cinnamon?

Ceylon Cinnamon
  • Blood sugar support
  • High cholesterol
  • Indigestion and gas
  • Antimicrobial
  • General flavoring and culinary use

Ceylon cinnamon is the so-called 'true' cinnamon, valued as a spice and used in traditional medicine for blood sugar, cholesterol, and digestion. Evidence for most health benefits is limited and mixed, but as a food it is generally safe and contains far less coumarin than common cassia cinnamon. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated supplements, especially if you have a health condition or take medications.

About Metoprolol

What Is Metoprolol Used For?

Brand names: Lopressor, Toprol XL

Metoprolol is used to treat several heart and blood pressure conditions. Metoprolol succinate extended-release tablets (including Toprol-XL) are approved for high blood pressure, angina pectoris (chest pain from the heart), and heart failure. Metoprolol tartrate tablets (including Lopressor) are approved for high blood pressure, angina, and — when used alongside intravenous metoprolol — to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death after a definite or suspected heart attack.

Metoprolol tartrate injection (intravenous form) is used in hemodynamically stable patients with a definite or suspected acute heart attack to reduce cardiovascular death, and is followed by oral metoprolol therapy. Lowering blood pressure with metoprolol reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks.
