Here's the concern when you pair chaparral with bortezomib (Velcade). This isn't about chaparral changing how your cancer treatment is metabolized. It's simpler than that: both can be hard on your liver. Bortezomib can already cause liver enzyme changes and, rarely, more serious liver injury, and chaparral has been tied to severe, sometimes permanent liver and kidney damage. Stacking two liver stressors together could add up.

I'll be honest, this is a theoretical concern based on anecdotal reports, not solid studies. But given how risky chaparral is on its own, and that the FDA has warned against it, I'd steer clear entirely while on bortezomib. Please run any supplement past your oncology team or pharmacist first.

Bortezomib is used to treat two types of cancer in adults: multiple myeloma (a cancer of plasma cells in the bone marrow) and mantle cell lymphoma (a type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma). These indications are shared across the available products — Velcade, Boruzu, and generic bortezomib formulations.
