However, the most serious adverse effect of EDTA is kidney toxicity for doses greater than 3 grams daily (15).     “Intravenously, ethylenediamene tetraacetic acid (EDTA) can commonly cause headache and faintness (15,108103). EDTA can also sometimes cause fever, chills, fatigue, and malaise (15,108099). Disodium EDTA can occasionally cause tremors, tingling, and paresthesias (15).

The American College of Medical Toxicology and The American Academy of Clinical Toxicology recommend against the unapproved use of chelation therapy products. Chelation therapy products can have teratogenic effects and result in severe side effects including dehydration, hypocalcemia, kidney failure, neurodevelopmental toxicity, and death.

Some Rifapentine Products Have a Food Rule — Chelation Therapy Products Should Not Break It

At least one FDA label for a product containing Rifapentine says to take it with food. If you take Chelation Therapy Products on an empty stomach out of habit, keep them separate — and take Rifapentine with a meal where the label says to.

This may not be true of your version. Food instructions belong to the product, not the ingredient: two Rifapentine products can carry different directions, and extended-release forms often differ from immediate-release ones. About Rifapentine

What Is Rifapentine Used For?

Brand name: Priftin

Rifapentine (brand name Priftin) is used to treat two forms of tuberculosis (TB) caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. For active pulmonary TB — an active infection in the lungs — it is approved for patients 12 years and older, always used alongside other TB medicines, never alone. For latent TB infection (LTBI) — where the bacteria are in the body but not causing active illness — it is approved for patients 2 years and older who are at high risk of the infection becoming active, always combined with isoniazid.

Priftin is not appropriate for every TB situation. It should not be used alone at any stage of active TB treatment, and it is not recommended as a once-weekly continuation regimen combined with isoniazid in people living with HIV who have active pulmonary TB, due to a higher risk of treatment failure or relapse.
