Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Darunavir, Ritonavir
Darunavir, Ritonavir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Chokeberry interacts with.
In vitro research shows that chokeberry inhibits CYP3A4. In humans, there is one case report of a drug interaction with trabectedin, a CYP3A4 substrate, which is hypothesized to have been caused by chokeberry inhibition of CYP3A4.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the short version: both darunavir and ritonavir are handled by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In fact, ritonavir is deliberately added to boost darunavir by slowing that enzyme down. Lab studies suggest chokeberry may also mildly block CYP3A4, so in theory it could nudge levels of these HIV medicines a bit higher, which might mean more stomach upset, nausea, diarrhea, or changes in blood fats.
I want to be honest though, this is very thin evidence. It's based on test-tube work plus a single case report with a different drug, not real studies with darunavir or ritonavir. Everyday chokeberry juice or jam is unlikely to matter. Before starting a concentrated supplement, just run it by your pharmacist or HIV provider so nothing throws off your therapy.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
- AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
- BCase-control study.

About Chokeberry
What is Chokeberry?
- Antioxidant support
- Heart and blood vessel health
- Blood pressure support
- Blood sugar support
- Common cold symptoms
- Anti-inflammatory support
Chokeberry (aronia) is a dark berry rich in antioxidants called polyphenols, and it's widely eaten as juice, jam, and supplements. Early research hints it may support heart health, blood pressure, and blood sugar, but the evidence is still limited and far from proven. It's generally well tolerated as a food, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated supplements.
