Deflazacort falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Chokeberry interacts with.

Theoretically, chokeberry might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that chokeberry inhibits CYP3A4. In humans, there is one case report of a drug interaction with trabectedin, a CYP3A4 substrate, which is hypothesized to have been caused by chokeberry inhibition of CYP3A4.

Here's the gist: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down and clear deflazacort. Lab research suggests chokeberry may slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happens in real life, deflazacort could clear more slowly and build up, which might mean stronger corticosteroid effects and more side effects like fluid retention, higher blood sugar, mood or sleep changes, stomach upset, or easier bruising.

I want to be honest about how thin the evidence is here. This is mostly test-tube data plus a single case report involving a different drug, so it's more theory than proven fact. A little chokeberry in food or juice is unlikely to cause trouble. Before adding a concentrated chokeberry supplement, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Deflazacort Used For?

Brand name: Emflaza

Deflazacort treats Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a rare genetic muscle disease that causes progressive muscle weakness. It is available under several brand names, each with slightly different age approvals.

Emflaza and Jaythari (both tablets and oral suspension) are approved for patients 2 years of age and older. Deflazacort tablets, Deflazacort oral suspension, Kymbee (tablet and oral suspension), and Pyquvi (oral suspension) are approved for patients 5 years of age and older.
