Cocoa and Talinolol

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Talinolol

Talinolol falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Cocoa interacts with.

Theoretically, taking cocoa with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Clinical research shows that cocoa can modestly decrease blood pressure in hypertensive and normotensive patients.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Talinolol is a beta-blocker that helps lower blood pressure and ease the heart's workload. Cocoa, thanks to its flavanols, can gently nudge your blood pressure down too. So when you pair the two, the worry is mostly additive: both pushing in the same direction could leave your blood pressure a little lower than expected. That might show up as dizziness, lightheadedness, fatigue, or feeling faint when you stand up.

Here's the honest part: this concern is theoretical, based on how the two work rather than strong studies. A cup of hot cocoa or a square of dark chocolate is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated cocoa supplements are where I'd pause. If you take those regularly, check in with your pharmacist or doctor first.

  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

About Cocoa

What is Cocoa?

Cocoa
  • Heart and blood vessel health
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Mental focus and mood
  • Skin moisturizing (cocoa butter)

Cocoa is rich in plant compounds called flavanols that may modestly support blood vessel function and blood pressure, but most chocolate products are high in sugar, fat, and calories, which can offset any benefit. Enjoy cocoa as part of a balanced diet, and talk to your pharmacist before using concentrated cocoa supplements, especially if you have heart or blood pressure conditions.
