Cocoa + Valsartan
Valsartan brand names: Diovan, Prexxartan.
Cocoa has a moderate interaction with Valsartan. Theoretically, taking cocoa with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS
Why this applies to Valsartan
Valsartan falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Cocoa interacts with.
Clinical research shows that cocoa can modestly decrease blood pressure in hypertensive and normotensive patients.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: both valsartan and cocoa can nudge your blood pressure down. Valsartan relaxes your blood vessels to lower pressure, and cocoa's flavanols may help vessels widen a little too. Stack the two together and, in theory, your numbers could dip a bit more than expected.
Keep in mind this is a theoretical concern based on how these work, not a strong warning from large studies. A cup of hot cocoa or a square of dark chocolate is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated cocoa or flavanol supplements are where I'd be more cautious. If you ever feel dizzy, lightheaded, or unusually tired, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

Questions About Cocoa or Valsartan
These are real questions from readers, answered by the pharmacists at HelloPharmacist — written by a person, not generated from a database. Each one covers Cocoa or Valsartan, not necessarily both, but if one is close to what you were about to ask it will usually go further than a database entry can:

This page covers Cocoa only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Valsartan page lists 182 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Valsartan page
“Of the 182 supplements and herbs on file for valsartan (Diovan), a medication for high blood pressure and heart failure, most either deepen its blood-pressure-lowering effect or work against it, and the four rated major deserve genuine respect before the rest of the page. Activated charcoal can cut the absorption of oral doses, and the…”

About Cocoa
What is Cocoa?
- Heart and blood vessel health
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Mental focus and mood
- Skin moisturizing (cocoa butter)
Cocoa is rich in plant compounds called flavanols that may modestly support blood vessel function and blood pressure, but most chocolate products are high in sugar, fat, and calories, which can offset any benefit. Enjoy cocoa as part of a balanced diet, and talk to your pharmacist before using concentrated cocoa supplements, especially if you have heart or blood pressure conditions.
About Valsartan
What Is Valsartan Used For?
Brand names: Diovan, Prexxartan
Valsartan treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, heart failure in adults, and reduces the risk of cardiovascular death in adults who have had a heart attack and have a weakened heart muscle. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of stroke and heart attack.
Diovan (valsartan) tablets are approved to treat high blood pressure in children as young as 1 year old. Valsartan tablets (other brands) are approved for children 6 years and older. Valsartan oral solution is specifically indicated for patients with heart failure or post-heart attack left ventricular dysfunction who are unable to swallow tablets.

Valsartan Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Valsartan as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Cocoa — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
