Here's the simple version: coffee charcoal acts like a sponge in your gut. Because of its porous, charcoal-like surface, it can grab onto medicines you swallow before your body absorbs them. If you take it too close to your amantadine, less of the drug may actually make it into your bloodstream.

For Parkinson's symptoms, weaker amantadine levels could mean more stiffness, tremor, or trouble moving, and if you take it for those medication-related movement problems, those could creep back too. This concern is based on how charcoal behaves in theory, not on strong studies, so don't panic. A safe habit is to separate the two by at least two hours. Before changing anything, please check with your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Amantadine Used For?

Brand names: Symmetrel, Gocovri, Osmolex ER

Amantadine capsules, tablets, and oral solution are used to prevent or treat uncomplicated respiratory illness caused by influenza A virus strains. They are also used in the treatment of parkinsonism and drug-induced extrapyramidal reactions (movement problems caused by certain medications).

Gocovri (an extended-release amantadine capsule) has two specific approved uses: treating dyskinesia (uncontrolled, involuntary movements) in people with Parkinson's disease who are taking levodopa-based therapy, and as an add-on treatment to levodopa/carbidopa for people experiencing "off" episodes (periods when Parkinson's symptoms return or worsen).
