Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to know if you ever take boric acid by mouth: coffee charcoal works like a sponge in your gut. Its porous, charred surface can grab onto substances passing through, including medications, and keep them from being fully absorbed. So taking the two close together could mean less boric acid actually gets into your system.

To be fair, this concern is theoretical, based on how charcoal behaves rather than direct studies with boric acid. Still, a simple fix solves it: space them out by at least two hours. One quick note though, boric acid is toxic if swallowed and is usually meant for external or vaginal use, not oral dosing, so please check with your pharmacist or doctor before taking it any way by mouth.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Boric Acid page

“Boric acid shows up as a vaginal suppository for stubborn yeast infections or as an antiseptic ointment, and I read its interaction list with genuine caution because of one entry above all. Activated charcoal, the single major-rated interaction of the 23 on file, adsorbs many medications and can shrink how much drug the body actually t…”

About Coffee Charcoal

What is Coffee Charcoal?

  • Diarrhea
  • Inflammatory bowel conditions
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Mild digestive upset
  • Wound and skin care (topical, traditional)

Coffee charcoal is made by roasting green coffee beans until they turn black, creating a charcoal-like material used traditionally for diarrhea and digestive complaints. Scientific evidence supporting its benefits is very limited, and it should not replace proven treatments. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a chronic gut condition.
