ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to Cetirizine, Pseudoephedrine
Cetirizine, Pseudoephedrine falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Coffee Charcoal interacts with.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the simple version: coffee charcoal acts a bit like the activated charcoal you may have heard of. Its porous surface can grab onto things in your gut, and that may include your Zyrtec-D (cetirizine plus pseudoephedrine). If you swallow them too close together, the charcoal could soak up some of the medicine before your body absorbs it.
The likely result is that your combo pill simply works less well, so you might get less allergy relief and less stuffy-nose decongestion than usual. This concern is based on how charcoal behaves rather than direct studies of this pair, so it's more theoretical than proven. To be safe, space them apart by at least two hours, and check with your pharmacist or doctor if you're unsure.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Cetirizine, Pseudoephedrine page
“Zyrtec-D combines the antihistamine cetirizine with pseudoephedrine, a decongestant that already raises heart rate and blood pressure, and that stimulant half is why this list warrants real vigilance. About Coffee Charcoal
What is Coffee Charcoal?
- Diarrhea
- Inflammatory bowel conditions
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
- Mild digestive upset
- Wound and skin care (topical, traditional)
Coffee charcoal is made by roasting green coffee beans until they turn black, creating a charcoal-like material used traditionally for diarrhea and digestive complaints.
