Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: coffee charcoal acts a bit like activated charcoal in your gut. Its porous surface can grab onto medicines you swallow, including dalfampridine (Ampyra), before your body has a chance to fully absorb them. If less of your dose gets in, you may not get the full walking benefit you're counting on with your MS.

The good news is this is a theoretical concern based on how charcoal behaves, not strong patient studies, and timing fixes most of it. Keeping the two doses at least a couple of hours apart usually avoids the problem. Ampyra is also a strict twice-daily, do-not-crush tablet, so don't change your schedule on your own. Check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Dalfampridine page

“Activated charcoal is the entry I would put in front of anyone taking dalfampridine (Ampyra) for walking difficulty in multiple sclerosis. It is the only major-rated interaction among the 23 on this page, because charcoal can adsorb medication in the gut and cut how much reaches the bloodstream, and an unreliable dose is a real problem…”

About Coffee Charcoal

What is Coffee Charcoal?

  • Diarrhea
  • Inflammatory bowel conditions
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Mild digestive upset
  • Wound and skin care (topical, traditional)

Coffee charcoal is made by roasting green coffee beans until they turn black, creating a charcoal-like material used traditionally for diarrhea and digestive complaints. Scientific evidence supporting its benefits is very limited, and it should not replace proven treatments. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a chronic gut condition.
