Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the basic idea: coffee charcoal acts a lot like the activated charcoal we sometimes use in the pharmacy. Its porous surface can grab onto medications sitting in your gut before they get absorbed. If you take it too close to your leflunomide (Arava) dose, less of the drug may make it into your bloodstream, which could weaken its ability to calm the inflammation and joint damage of rheumatoid arthritis.

This is a theoretical concern based on how charcoal behaves, not on hard studies with leflunomide itself, so don't panic. To play it safe, simply space them apart by at least two hours. Interestingly, leflunomide already lingers in the body for a long time, so an occasional charcoal dose isn't likely to undo your treatment. Still, check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them regularly.

“Leflunomide (Arava) quiets rheumatoid arthritis by damping down the immune system, and its best-known danger is liver injury, so the 59 supplements and herbs on this page are worth slowing down for. Thirty-eight of them carry liver risks of their own, and of the four rated major, two are simply alcoholic drinks, while a third, Siberian…”

About Coffee Charcoal

What is Coffee Charcoal?

  • Diarrhea
  • Inflammatory bowel conditions
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Mild digestive upset
  • Wound and skin care (topical, traditional)

Coffee charcoal is made by roasting green coffee beans until they turn black, creating a charcoal-like material used traditionally for diarrhea and digestive complaints. Scientific evidence supporting its benefits is very limited, and it should not replace proven treatments. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a chronic gut condition.

About Leflunomide

What Is Leflunomide Used For?

Brand name: Arava

Leflunomide tablets — sold under the brand name Arava and as generic leflunomide — are used to treat active rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in adults. Both Arava and generic leflunomide tablets are FDA-approved for this use.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks the joints, causing pain, swelling, and stiffness. Leflunomide helps calm that overactive immune response to reduce symptoms and slow joint damage.
