Here's the simple version: coffee charcoal acts a bit like activated charcoal in your gut. Its porous surface can grab onto things you swallow, including medicines, before your body absorbs them. If you take it too close to your lorlatinib (Lorbrena), it could soak up some of the dose so less gets into your bloodstream. That matters because lorlatinib is your cancer treatment, and you want the full amount working against the tumor.

The good news is this concern is based on how charcoal behaves, not on hard studies with this drug, so it's more of a theoretical caution. An easy fix is spacing them apart. Please check with your oncology pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and don't change your lorlatinib on your own.

What Is Lorlatinib Used For?

Brand name: Lorbrena

Lorbrena (lorlatinib) is used to treat adults with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) — meaning lung cancer that has spread — when lab testing confirms the tumor is ALK-positive (has a specific gene change that drives cancer growth). Patients must be tested with an FDA-approved diagnostic test before starting treatment.

Lorbrena has been studied in patients who have not yet received treatment for advanced disease, as well as in patients whose cancer progressed on other ALK-targeting medicines.
