Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's a small but interesting wrinkle with natamycin: it actually comes as Natacyn, which is an eye drop (a topical ophthalmic suspension), not a pill you swallow. The interaction on file is about charcoal grabbing onto drugs in your gut and carrying them out before your body can absorb them. Since you're dabbing natamycin into your eye to treat a fungal eye infection, coffee charcoal sitting in your stomach really has no way to interfere with it.

So in practice, this one shouldn't worry you. Keep using your eye drops exactly as directed. If you ever take a swallowed antifungal alongside coffee charcoal, that's worth spacing out by a couple hours, and your pharmacist can help you sort the timing.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Natamycin page

“This list deserves real attention, even though natamycin (Natacyn) is an antifungal most often given as an eye drop for fungal eye infections. Of the 20 supplements and herbs on file, one rates major, and it is activated charcoal, which can pull many medicines out of the body and lower their levels no matter how a drug is given.”

About Coffee Charcoal

What is Coffee Charcoal?

  • Diarrhea
  • Inflammatory bowel conditions
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Mild digestive upset
  • Wound and skin care (topical, traditional)

Coffee charcoal is made by roasting green coffee beans until they turn black, creating a charcoal-like material used traditionally for diarrhea and digestive complaints. Scientific evidence supporting its benefits is very limited, and it should not replace proven treatments. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a chronic gut condition.
