Here's the simple version: coffee charcoal acts a bit like activated charcoal in your gut. Its porous surface can grab onto pills you swallow, including pomalidomide (Pomalyst), before your body has a chance to absorb them. If less of your dose gets in, you may get less of the cancer-fighting effect you're counting on. With a serious condition like multiple myeloma or Kaposi's sarcoma, you really don't want your treatment quietly underperforming.

This concern is based on how charcoal behaves, not on direct studies with this exact drug, so it's more of a sensible precaution than a proven problem. A simple fix is timing. If you use coffee charcoal, separating it from your pomalidomide by at least two hours helps. Please run this by your oncology pharmacist or doctor before mixing the two.

About Pomalidomide

What Is Pomalidomide Used For?

Brand name: Pomalyst

Pomalidomide capsules are used in adults with multiple myeloma (a blood cancer affecting plasma cells) who have already tried at least two prior treatments — including lenalidomide and a proteasome inhibitor — and whose disease has continued to progress. It is given in combination with dexamethasone for this use.

Pomalidomide capsules are also used to treat Kaposi sarcoma (KS) — a cancer that can cause lesions on the skin and in internal organs — both in adults with AIDS-related KS after antiretroviral therapy has stopped working, and in adults with KS who are HIV-negative. The KS indication was approved based on response rate; ongoing studies are confirming long-term benefit.
