Here's the practical concern with coffee charcoal and your zidovudine (Retrovir). Like other charcoals, this roasted material has a porous surface that can grab onto medicines sitting in your gut. If you swallow both around the same time, the charcoal may soak up some of your zidovudine before your body absorbs it, meaning less drug actually gets into your bloodstream.

With an HIV medicine, keeping blood levels steady really matters. Getting too little, even briefly, isn't something you want with treatment that's controlling the virus. The simple fix is spacing them out: take your zidovudine and the coffee charcoal at least two hours apart. This interaction is based on how charcoal behaves rather than firm studies, so check with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing them.

What Is Zidovudine Used For?

Brand names: Retrovir, Retrovir Injection

Zidovudine is used in combination with other antiretroviral medicines to treat HIV-1 infection in adults and children. It is available as capsules, tablets, oral solution, and — as Retrovir injection — intravenously for patients who cannot take oral forms.

Retrovir (zidovudine) capsules, oral solution, and injection are also approved to help prevent HIV-1 from passing from a pregnant mother to her baby. This prevention regimen involves treating the mother before and during labor, and then treating the newborn after birth. In most cases, other antiretroviral medicines are used alongside zidovudine for this purpose.
