Here's the simple version: like other charcoals, coffee charcoal has a porous surface that can grab onto things in your gut, including your medication. If you swallow it too close to your zonisamide dose, it may soak up some of the drug before your body can absorb it. That could mean less zonisamide reaching your bloodstream, and for a seizure medicine, weaker levels can mean less protection against seizures.

The good news is this is mostly a timing issue based on how charcoal behaves, not strong human studies. Keeping the two at least two hours apart usually avoids the problem. Since zonisamide controls a serious condition, please run this past your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Zonisamide Used For?

Brand names: Zonegran, Zonisade

Zonisamide is used as add-on therapy — meaning it is combined with other seizure medications, not used alone — to treat partial seizures (seizures that start in one part of the brain) in adults with epilepsy. Zonegran (capsule) and generic zonisamide capsules are approved for adults with epilepsy.

Zonisade (oral suspension) is approved as add-on therapy for partial-onset seizures in adults and in patients 16 years of age and older.
