Here's the gist for these two. Defibrotide is a clot-preventing medicine given by IV in the hospital, usually for a serious liver complication after a stem-cell transplant. Its main risk on its own is bleeding. DMSO, in lab studies, has shown it can make platelets less sticky, and platelets are the cells that help you form clots. So in theory, layering DMSO on top of defibrotide could nudge your bleeding risk a little higher (think easy bruising, nosebleeds, or bleeding that's slower to stop).

I want to be straight with you though: this concern comes only from test-tube data, not from real patients, so it's theoretical. Also, defibrotide is given in a closely monitored hospital setting, where your team is already watching for bleeding. If you use DMSO on your skin, just mention it to your transplant team or pharmacist so they have the full picture.

What Is Defibrotide Injection Used For?

Defitelio (defibrotide injection) is used to treat hepatic veno-occlusive disease (VOD) — also called sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS) — in adult and pediatric patients. This is a serious condition where small blood vessels in the liver become blocked, most often after a hematopoietic stem-cell transplant (HSCT).

Defitelio is specifically indicated when VOD is accompanied by kidney dysfunction or pulmonary (lung) dysfunction, making it a treatment for one of the most severe forms of this complication.
