Chlorpheniramine, Methscopolamine, Phenylephrine falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Ergot interacts with.

Certain ergot alkaloids, such as dihydroergotamine, act as serotonin agonists. Theoretically, combining serotonergic drugs with ergot might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders. Monitor patients for signs of serotonin syndrome and other serotonergic side effects if using ergot with serotonergic drugs.
Serotonergic drugs include the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as fluoxetine (Prozac), paroxetine (Paxil), and sertraline (Zoloft); tricyclic and atypical antidepressants such as amitriptyline (Elavil), clomipramine (Anafranil), and imipramine (Tofranil); triptans such as sumatriptan (Imitrex), zolmitriptan (Zomig), and rizatriptan (Maxalt); opioids such as methadone (Dolophine) and tramadol (Ultram); and many other medications.

Let me first say this plainly: crude ergot isn't something you should be taking at all. It's toxic and the dose can't be controlled safely at home. So my biggest concern here is the ergot itself, not really this cold and allergy combo product.

That said, the interaction on file is mostly theoretical and based only on scattered reports. The chlorpheniramine piece has mild serotonin-related activity, and combining it with ergot could, in theory, nudge up serotonin-type effects. Realistically, you'd be more likely to notice the usual things from this medicine, like drowsiness, dry mouth, a fast heartbeat from the phenylephrine, or feeling jittery. Ergot also tightens blood vessels, which adds caution. Please talk with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing these, and don't use raw ergot.

The piece of this combination product I want to flag is the phenylephrine, a decongestant that works by tightening blood vessels. Ergot does something similar through its ergot alkaloids, which are strong blood-vessel constrictors. Stack the two together and you can squeeze blood vessels harder than either would alone. That can show up as a higher blood pressure, headache, cold or tingling hands and feet, or a pounding heart.

To be fair, this concern rests mostly on case reports rather than solid studies, so it is a possible rather than guaranteed problem. But raw ergot is genuinely toxic and not safe as a home supplement to begin with. Please don't change anything on your own. Run it by your pharmacist or doctor first so they can look at your blood pressure and the full ingredient list.

What is Ergot?

Ergot is a toxic fungus that grows on rye and contains powerful chemicals (ergot alkaloids) that strongly narrow blood vessels and squeeze the uterus. Because raw ergot is poisonous and the dose is impossible to control safely, it should never be used as a home remedy or supplement. Some purified ergot chemicals are used as prescription drugs under strict medical supervision, but the crude herb is not safe to take.
