Escitalopram falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Ergot interacts with.

Certain ergot alkaloids, such as dihydroergotamine, act as serotonin agonists. Theoretically, combining serotonergic drugs with ergot might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders. Monitor patients for signs of serotonin syndrome and other serotonergic side effects if using ergot with serotonergic drugs.
Serotonergic drugs include the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as fluoxetine (Prozac), paroxetine (Paxil), and sertraline (Zoloft); tricyclic and atypical antidepressants such as amitriptyline (Elavil), clomipramine (Anafranil), and imipramine (Tofranil); triptans such as sumatriptan (Imitrex), zolmitriptan (Zomig), and rizatriptan (Maxalt); opioids such as methadone (Dolophine) and tramadol (Ultram); and many other medications.

Here's the connection worth knowing. Your Lexapro (escitalopram) raises serotonin levels in the brain. Certain ergot chemicals, like the ones in dihydroergotamine, also nudge serotonin signaling. Put the two together and, in theory, you could push serotonin too high, which is what we call serotonin syndrome. Signs include feeling agitated or restless, a racing heart, sweating, shivering, muscle twitching, and feeling overheated or shaky.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: this is mostly theoretical and based on scattered case reports, not strong studies. That said, raw ergot is genuinely toxic and isn't safe to use as a home supplement at all. Please don't change your escitalopram, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing anything ergot-related with it.

What is Ergot?

Ergot is a toxic fungus that grows on rye and contains powerful chemicals (ergot alkaloids) that strongly narrow blood vessels and squeeze the uterus. Because raw ergot is poisonous and the dose is impossible to control safely, it should never be used as a home remedy or supplement. Some purified ergot chemicals are used as prescription drugs under strict medical supervision, but the crude herb is not safe to take.

What Is Escitalopram Used For?

Brand name: Lexapro

Escitalopram treats major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults and in adolescents 12 years of age and older. It also treats generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) in adults.

Lexapro (escitalopram) tablets are additionally approved to treat GAD in pediatric patients 7 years of age and older. Escitalopram capsules are indicated for MDD and GAD in adults younger than 65 years of age, and for MDD in pediatric patients 12 and older — but are not for use in adults 65 or older.
