Here's the thing to keep in mind with Actifed: the pseudoephedrine in it is a decongestant that works by tightening up blood vessels (that's how it shrinks swollen nasal tissue). Ergot does something similar, only much more strongly, by squeezing blood vessels throughout the body. Put the two together and those vessel-narrowing effects can stack up.

In real life that could mean a noticeable bump in blood pressure, a faster or pounding heartbeat, headache, or cold, tingly fingers and toes from reduced circulation. I'll be honest, this is based mostly on anecdotal reports rather than strong studies, so it isn't a sure thing. Still, since ergot itself is unsafe as a home remedy, please run any combination like this by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What is Ergot?

Ergot is a toxic fungus that grows on rye and contains powerful chemicals (ergot alkaloids) that strongly narrow blood vessels and squeeze the uterus. Because raw ergot is poisonous and the dose is impossible to control safely, it should never be used as a home remedy or supplement. Some purified ergot chemicals are used as prescription drugs under strict medical supervision, but the crude herb is not safe to take.
