Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS
Why this applies to Bromfenac Sodium
Bromfenac Sodium falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group European Barberry interacts with.
In vitro and animal evidence suggest that berberine, a constituent of European barberry, might inhibit platelet aggregation. Theoretically, European barberry might have a similar effect.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for these two together. Bromfenac is an anti-inflammatory eye drop you use after cataract surgery, and being an NSAID it can slightly nudge up bleeding risk. European barberry contains berberine, which in lab and animal studies seems to make platelets (the cells that help blood clot) a little less sticky. Put them side by side and, in theory, you could see a touch more bruising or bleeding tendency.
I want to be honest though: this concern is theoretical, based on test-tube and animal work, not real patient cases. And bromfenac is dosed right into the eye, so very little reaches your bloodstream. The risk is likely small, but since you're healing from surgery, please run it by your eye surgeon or pharmacist before combining them.

About European Barberry
What is European Barberry?
- Digestive upset
- Antimicrobial support
- Blood sugar support
- Cholesterol and metabolic support
- Skin conditions
European barberry is a shrub whose root, bark, and berries contain berberine, a bitter plant alkaloid that has been studied mostly in isolated form. Some early research on berberine is promising for blood sugar and cholesterol, but high-quality evidence for the whole barberry herb is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
