Crizotinib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group European Barberry interacts with.

Theoretically, European barberry might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
There is very preliminary evidence suggesting that berberine, a constituent of European barberry, might inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme. Theoretically, European barberry might have a similar effect.

Here's the basic idea with these two together. Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down and clear crizotinib. Berberine, the main active compound in European barberry, may slow that enzyme down a bit. If clearance slows, more crizotinib can linger in your system, which can mean stronger effects and a higher chance of its known side effects, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, vision changes, swelling, liver irritation, or heart rhythm changes (QT prolongation).

I'll be honest though, this concern is theoretical, based on how berberine behaves in lab studies rather than real patient data. Crizotinib is a serious cancer medicine with a tight safety window, so I wouldn't combine it with a barberry supplement without checking first. Please run it by your oncologist or pharmacist before adding it.

European barberry is a shrub whose root, bark, and berries contain berberine, a bitter plant alkaloid that has been studied mostly in isolated form. About Crizotinib

What Is Crizotinib Used For?

Brand name: Xalkori

Xalkori (crizotinib) is used to treat adult patients with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) whose tumors test positive for the ALK or ROS1 gene abnormality, as confirmed by an FDA-approved test.

Xalkori is also used to treat pediatric patients aged 1 year and older and young adults with relapsed or refractory systemic ALK-positive anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL). Additionally, it treats adult and pediatric patients aged 1 year and older with unresectable, recurrent, or refractory ALK-positive inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT). Note: Xalkori's safety and effectiveness in older adults with relapsed or refractory ALK-positive ALCL have not been established.
