ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Fluphenazine
Fluphenazine falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group European Barberry interacts with.
In vitro evidence suggests that European barberry might have anticholinergic properties.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with fluphenazine (Prolixin) and European barberry. Fluphenazine already carries some anticholinergic activity, which is just a fancy way of saying it can dry you out and slow certain body functions. Think dry mouth, blurry vision, constipation, trouble urinating, and sometimes feeling foggy or dizzy. Lab studies hint that barberry (through its berberine) may have mild anticholinergic effects too, so in theory the two stacked together could nudge those symptoms up a notch.
I want to be honest though: this is a theoretical concern based on test-tube data, not real patient reports. It's not a sound-the-alarm situation. Still, since fluphenazine is a serious medication, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding barberry rather than starting it on your own.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Fluphenazine page
“Take real care with supplements while on fluphenazine (Prolixin), an antipsychotic used mainly for schizophrenia. Five of the 148 ingredients on file rate major: herbs like henbane that stack anticholinergic side effects (dry mouth, blurred vision, confusion) onto a drug already prone to them, two rauwolfia plants that can intensify it…”

About European Barberry
What is European Barberry?
- Digestive upset
- Antimicrobial support
- Blood sugar support
- Cholesterol and metabolic support
- Skin conditions
European barberry is a shrub whose root, bark, and berries contain berberine, a bitter plant alkaloid that has been studied mostly in isolated form. Some early research on berberine is promising for blood sugar and cholesterol, but high-quality evidence for the whole barberry herb is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
About Fluphenazine
What Is Fluphenazine Used For?
Brand names: Prolixin, Permitil, Fluphenazine
Fluphenazine is used to manage the symptoms of psychotic disorders. The tablets, oral solution (concentrate and elixir) and fluphenazine hydrochloride injection are all labeled for this use.
Fluphenazine Decanoate injection is a long-acting form. It is meant for people who need prolonged injectable antipsychotic therapy, such as those with chronic schizophrenia. None of these products has been shown to work for behavior problems in people with mental retardation.
