Here's the thing to keep in mind if you pair these two. European barberry (and its main alkaloid, berberine) has been shown in some animal and human studies to gently lower blood pressure. Methazolamide isn't a typical blood pressure pill, but as a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor it acts a bit like a mild diuretic and can nudge your blood pressure and fluid balance downward too. Stack those effects and you could feel lightheaded, dizzy, tired, or wobbly when you stand up quickly.

Honestly, this concern is theoretical and based on how these things work, not strong proof. Small culinary amounts of barberry are unlikely to matter much, but concentrated berberine supplements are a different story. Before combining them, run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Methazolamide Used For?

Brand name: Neptazane

Methazolamide tablets are used to treat eye conditions where lowering intraocular pressure (pressure inside the eye) is expected to help. These include chronic open-angle glaucoma and secondary glaucoma.

Methazolamide tablets are also used before surgery in acute angle-closure glaucoma, when reducing eye pressure ahead of the procedure is needed. Note that long-term use in angle-closure glaucoma is not appropriate.
