Bexarotene falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group False Unicorn interacts with.

In vitro, false unicorn extract inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity. Theoretically, false unicorn might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates. Drugs that might be affected include some calcium channel blockers (diltiazem, nicardipine, verapamil), chemotherapeutic agents (etoposide, paclitaxel, vinblastine, vincristine, vindesine), antifungals (ketoconazole, itraconazole), glucocorticoids, cisapride (Propulsid), alfentanil (Alfenta), fentanyl (Sublimaze), losartan (Cozaar), fluoxetine (Prozac), midazolam (Versed), omeprazole (Prilosec), ondansetron (Zofran), propranolol (Inderal), fexofenadine (Allegra), and numerous others.

Here's the gist for bexarotene (Targretin). Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break this medicine down and clear it out. In lab (test tube) studies, False Unicorn appears to slow that same enzyme. If that happened in a real person, bexarotene could clear more slowly and build up in your system, which may mean stronger effects and a higher chance of side effects like high triglycerides or cholesterol, low thyroid levels, low white blood cell counts, headache, or skin dryness.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: this is only theoretical, based on lab data, not human studies. Still, because bexarotene is a serious cancer drug with real risks, I'd check with your oncologist or pharmacist before combining the two.

What Is Bexarotene Used For?

Brand name: Targretin

Bexarotene capsules (brands: Bexarotene, Targretin) are used to treat the skin symptoms of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) in patients whose disease has not responded to at least one prior systemic treatment.

Bexarotene gel 1% (brands: Bexarotene, Targretin) is used to treat the skin lesions of early-stage CTCL (Stage IA and IB) when other therapies have not worked or could not be tolerated. The gel is a topical therapy and is not intended for systemic use.
