Why this applies to Fluphenazine

Fluphenazine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group False Unicorn interacts with.

In vitro, false unicorn extract inhibits cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) activity. Theoretically, false unicorn might increase the levels of CYP2D6 substrates. Some of drugs that are CYP2D6 substrates include amitriptyline (Elavil), clozapine (Clozaril), codeine, desipramine (Norpramin), donepezil (Aricept), fentanyl (Duragesic), flecainide (Tambocor), fluoxetine (Prozac), meperidine (Demerol), methadone (Dolophine), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), olanzapine (Zyprexa), ondansetron (Zofran), tramadol (Ultram), trazodone (Desyrel), and others.

Here's the gist with Fluphenazine (Prolixin) and False Unicorn. Your body relies partly on an enzyme called CYP2D6 to break down fluphenazine and clear it out. In lab dish testing (not in people), False Unicorn seems to slow that enzyme down. If that held true in the body, fluphenazine could build up a bit higher than expected.

What might that look like? More of fluphenazine's usual effects, like drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, low blood pressure when standing, or muscle stiffness and restlessness. I want to be honest, though: this is only theoretical, based on test-tube work, so the real-world risk is uncertain. Still, since fluphenazine is a serious medication, I'd run False Unicorn by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them rather than guessing.

What Is Fluphenazine Used For?

Brand names: Prolixin, Permitil, Fluphenazine

Fluphenazine hydrochloride tablets and oral solution are indicated for the management of psychotic disorders. Fluphenazine Hydrochloride Injection is also used for psychotic disorders and can bridge patients to oral therapy.

Fluphenazine Decanoate Injection is a long-acting form specifically intended for patients who need extended antipsychotic treatment — for example, those with chronic schizophrenia who benefit from a single injection that can last up to four weeks or longer. It is not approved for behavioral problems related to intellectual disability, and it is not approved for dementia-related psychosis in elderly patients.
