Nortriptyline falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group False Unicorn interacts with.

In vitro, false unicorn extract inhibits cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) activity. Theoretically, false unicorn might increase the levels of CYP2D6 substrates. Some of drugs that are CYP2D6 substrates include amitriptyline (Elavil), clozapine (Clozaril), codeine, desipramine (Norpramin), donepezil (Aricept), fentanyl (Duragesic), flecainide (Tambocor), fluoxetine (Prozac), meperidine (Demerol), methadone (Dolophine), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), olanzapine (Zyprexa), ondansetron (Zofran), tramadol (Ultram), trazodone (Desyrel), and others.

Here's the gist for nortriptyline (Pamelor). Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to clear this antidepressant out of your system. In lab studies, False Unicorn appears to slow that enzyme down. If that holds true in people, less nortriptyline gets broken down, so the amount in your blood could creep up.

For an active drug like nortriptyline, higher levels can mean more of its usual side effects: drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, dizziness on standing, or a faster heartbeat. The catch is that this is based only on test-tube data, not real people, so we honestly don't know how strong the effect would be. Still, since tricyclics can be touchy, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.
