Nelfinavir Mesylate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group False Unicorn interacts with.

In vitro, false unicorn extract inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity. Theoretically, false unicorn might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates. Drugs that might be affected include some calcium channel blockers (diltiazem, nicardipine, verapamil), chemotherapeutic agents (etoposide, paclitaxel, vinblastine, vincristine, vindesine), antifungals (ketoconazole, itraconazole), glucocorticoids, cisapride (Propulsid), alfentanil (Alfenta), fentanyl (Sublimaze), losartan (Cozaar), fluoxetine (Prozac), midazolam (Versed), omeprazole (Prilosec), ondansetron (Zofran), propranolol (Inderal), fexofenadine (Allegra), and numerous others.

Here's the gist for nelfinavir (Viracept): your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break this HIV medicine down. In lab (test tube) studies, false unicorn appears to slow that same enzyme. If that held true in people, nelfinavir could clear out more slowly and build up, which may mean more of its usual side effects like diarrhea, nausea, gas, or rash.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. It comes only from in-vitro work, not from real patients, so it's mostly theoretical. Still, since nelfinavir is part of keeping HIV under control, I wouldn't experiment on my own. Please run false unicorn by your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.
