Ritonavir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group False Unicorn interacts with.

In vitro, false unicorn extract inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity. Theoretically, false unicorn might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates. Drugs that might be affected include some calcium channel blockers (diltiazem, nicardipine, verapamil), chemotherapeutic agents (etoposide, paclitaxel, vinblastine, vincristine, vindesine), antifungals (ketoconazole, itraconazole), glucocorticoids, cisapride (Propulsid), alfentanil (Alfenta), fentanyl (Sublimaze), losartan (Cozaar), fluoxetine (Prozac), midazolam (Versed), omeprazole (Prilosec), ondansetron (Zofran), propranolol (Inderal), fexofenadine (Allegra), and numerous others.

Here's the gist with ritonavir (Norvir). Your body clears it largely through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In lab dish testing, False Unicorn appears to slow that same enzyme down. If that held true in people, your ritonavir could clear more slowly and build up a bit, which might mean more of its common side effects like nausea, diarrhea, stomach upset, tingling around the mouth, or changes in taste.

I want to be honest about how thin the evidence is here. This is only a test-tube finding, not something shown in actual patients, so it may not matter in real life. Still, ritonavir is a serious HIV medicine you don't want to disturb. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding False Unicorn, and don't change your ritonavir on your own.

What Is Ritonavir Used For?

Brand name: Norvir

Ritonavir (brand name Norvir) is used together with other HIV medicines to treat HIV-1 infection in adults and children older than one month of age. It is always taken as part of a combination regimen — never on its own.

Norvir oral powder is specifically indicated for pediatric patients with HIV-1 infection. Norvir tablets and oral solution are indicated for both adults and pediatric patients with HIV-1 infection. Ritonavir tablets (generic) are also indicated for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in combination with other antiretroviral agents.
