Valbenazine Tosylate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group False Unicorn interacts with.

In vitro, false unicorn extract inhibits cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) activity. Theoretically, false unicorn might increase the levels of CYP2D6 substrates. Some of drugs that are CYP2D6 substrates include amitriptyline (Elavil), clozapine (Clozaril), codeine, desipramine (Norpramin), donepezil (Aricept), fentanyl (Duragesic), flecainide (Tambocor), fluoxetine (Prozac), meperidine (Demerol), methadone (Dolophine), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), olanzapine (Zyprexa), ondansetron (Zofran), tramadol (Ultram), trazodone (Desyrel), and others.

Here's the basic idea with Ingrezza (valbenazine). Your body relies partly on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to break this medicine down. In lab studies (not in people), False Unicorn slowed that same enzyme. If it does the same thing in the body, valbenazine could clear out more slowly and build up a bit higher than usual.

What that might look like for you is more of the drug's typical side effects, things like sleepiness, balance or coordination trouble, or feeling drowsy during the day. I want to be honest though: this is only a theoretical concern based on test-tube data, so we don't really know how much it matters in real life. Before adding False Unicorn, please check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

In vitro, false unicorn extract inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity. Theoretically, false unicorn might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates. Drugs that might be affected include some calcium channel blockers (diltiazem, nicardipine, verapamil), chemotherapeutic agents (etoposide, paclitaxel, vinblastine, vincristine, vindesine), antifungals (ketoconazole, itraconazole), glucocorticoids, cisapride (Propulsid), alfentanil (Alfenta), fentanyl (Sublimaze), losartan (Cozaar), fluoxetine (Prozac), midazolam (Versed), omeprazole (Prilosec), ondansetron (Zofran), propranolol (Inderal), fexofenadine (Allegra), and numerous others.

Here's the gist for your Ingrezza (valbenazine). Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break it down. In lab dish testing, False Unicorn appears to slow that same enzyme. If that held true in people, it could let valbenazine build up a bit higher than usual, which might mean more of its typical side effects, things like sleepiness, balance trouble, or in some cases changes to your heart rhythm (QT prolongation).

That said, I want to be honest about the strength of this. This is only a test-tube finding, not something proven in humans, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a confirmed problem. Still, before combining them, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on how you're feeling.

Brand name: Ingrezza

Valbenazine — sold as Ingrezza and INGREZZA Sprinkle — is approved for two conditions in adults. The first is tardive dyskinesia, a movement disorder that causes uncontrolled, repetitive facial or body movements, often brought on by long-term use of certain psychiatric medications. The second is chorea associated with Huntington's disease, which refers to the involuntary, dance-like jerking movements that are a hallmark of that condition.

Both Ingrezza and INGREZZA Sprinkle are approved for both of these uses.
