Losartan Potassium falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Fennel interacts with.

Theoretically, fennel might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.

In vitro research suggests that fennel inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the quick picture with fennel and your losartan (Cozaar). Losartan is actually a bit unusual: it's a prodrug, meaning your liver has to convert it into its more active form, and an enzyme called CYP3A4 helps with part of that process. Lab studies hint that fennel might block CYP3A4. In theory, slowing that conversion could shift how much active drug you make, which might slightly soften the blood-pressure-lowering effect. That said, losartan itself still works on its own, so any real-world change is likely small.

The big caveat: this comes only from test-tube research, not from people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. A little fennel in cooking or tea is very unlikely to matter. If you're using concentrated fennel capsules or the essential oil, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up.

Fennel is a Mediterranean herb widely used as a food and spice, and traditionally taken for digestive complaints, colic, and menstrual cramps. Some small studies suggest possible benefit for certain stomach and menstrual symptoms, but the evidence is limited. It is generally well tolerated in food amounts, but concentrated supplements and the essential oil should be used with caution and after checking with your pharmacist or doctor.

About Losartan

What Is Losartan Used For?

Brand name: Cozaar

Losartan tablets — available as branded Cozaar and several generic products — are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children 6 years and older. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks. Losartan tablets are also used to reduce the risk of stroke in people with high blood pressure who also have left ventricular hypertrophy (an enlarged left side of the heart). Note: evidence suggests this stroke-risk benefit may not apply to Black patients.

Losartan tablets are additionally approved to protect the kidneys in people with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and signs of kidney damage (diabetic nephropathy). Arbli, the oral suspension form, shares these same approved uses.
