Why this applies to Aliskiren

Aliskiren falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Fo-ti interacts with.

Theoretically, fo-ti might increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research suggests that fo-ti might inhibit CYP3A4. One in vitro study suggests that the degree of CYP3A4 inhibition may depend on the type of fo-ti extract (i.e., the raw plant leads to greater inhibition than extensively processed extracts). However, this evidence conflicts with animal research suggesting that fo-ti does not inhibit CYP3A4. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for aliskiren (Tekturna): your body partly clears it using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In lab dishes, fo-ti has shown some ability to slow that enzyme down. If it did the same in people, aliskiren could build up a bit more than expected, which might nudge your blood pressure too low. Watch for dizziness, lightheadedness, or feeling faint, especially when standing up.

That said, I want to keep this in perspective. This is a theoretical concern based only on test-tube and animal studies, and it has never actually been reported in humans. Raw fo-ti may affect the enzyme more than heavily processed extracts. Still, since fo-ti has been linked to liver issues, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

Aliskiren and Tekturna tablets are both approved to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and in children who are at least 6 years old and weigh 50 kg (about 110 lbs) or more. Lowering high blood pressure reduces the risk of serious events like strokes and heart attacks.
