Ponatinib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group German Chamomile interacts with.

Theoretically, German chamomile might inhibit CYP3A4 and increase levels of drugs metabolized by these enzymes.
In vitro evidence shows that German chamomile might inhibit CYP3A4. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, there might be an increase in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 in patients taking German chamomile.

Here's the gist for ponatinib (Iclusig): your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear it. German chamomile, in lab dish studies, looks like it might slow that enzyme down. If that played out in real life, ponatinib could build up a bit higher than expected, which could mean more of its known side effects, things like high blood pressure, fluid retention, fatigue, mouth sores, or rarely more serious heart and blood-vessel problems.

The honest part: this is theoretical. It's only been seen in test tubes, not in actual patients, so we don't truly know if a cup of chamomile tea matters here. But because ponatinib is a potent cancer drug with real risks, please don't add chamomile (especially concentrated capsules) without first checking with your oncologist or pharmacist.

German chamomile is a widely used herbal remedy taken mainly as a tea for calming, sleep, and digestive complaints. Early research suggests possible benefits for mild anxiety and some skin or digestive issues, but the evidence is limited and most uses are based on tradition rather than strong proof. It is generally well tolerated, but people allergic to ragweed or related plants and those who are pregnant should be cautious.

About Ponatinib

What Is Ponatinib Used For?

Brand name: Iclusig

Ponatinib, sold as Iclusig, treats two types of blood cancer in adults. For Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Ph+ ALL), Iclusig is used in combination with chemotherapy for newly diagnosed patients, or as a single agent for patients who cannot take other kinase inhibitors or who have a specific mutation called T315I. For chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), Iclusig treats chronic phase CML when at least two prior kinase inhibitors have not worked or caused intolerable side effects, accelerated or blast phase CML when no other kinase inhibitors are suitable, and any phase of CML with the T315I mutation.

Iclusig is not approved or recommended for newly diagnosed chronic phase CML.
