German Chamomile and Triazolam

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

German Chamomile interacts with whole categories of medication. Triazolam falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with German Chamomile in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Triazolam

Triazolam falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group German Chamomile interacts with.

Theoretically, German chamomile might have additive effects when used with CNS depressants.
German chamomile has mild sedative effects. Theoretically, concomitant use with drugs with sedative properties can cause additive effects and side effects.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing with combining chamomile tea and Triazolam (Halcion). Triazolam is already a strong sleep medicine that quiets down brain activity to help you doze off. Chamomile has its own mild calming, sleepy effect, so stacking the two could add up. In theory, that might leave you more drowsy than expected, groggy the next morning, dizzy, or unsteady on your feet, which raises the risk of a fall.

I want to be straight with you though: this caution is theoretical and comes only from lab and animal data, not real patient reports. A normal cup of chamomile tea is unlikely to cause trouble for most people. Still, since Triazolam is potent, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them, especially with concentrated chamomile supplements.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

2 of 2

Triazolam also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, German chamomile might inhibit CYP3A4 and increase levels of drugs metabolized by these enzymes.
In vitro evidence shows that German chamomile might inhibit CYP3A4. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, there might be an increase in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 in patients taking German chamomile.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the situation with these two. Triazolam (Halcion) is cleared from your body by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. German chamomile, in lab studies, seems to slow that same enzyme down. If chamomile blocks the cleanup crew, triazolam can build up higher than expected, which could make its effects stronger. With a sleep medicine like this, that might mean more daytime drowsiness, dizziness, grogginess, trouble with balance, or memory fuzziness the next morning.

The reassuring part: this is based only on test-tube research and hasn't been reported in real people, so the concern is mostly theoretical. A cup of chamomile tea is far less likely to matter than concentrated capsules. Still, since both can make you sleepy, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

About German Chamomile

What is German Chamomile?

German Chamomile
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Sleep and relaxation
  • Digestive upset
  • Skin irritation and inflammation
  • Mouth sores and gum irritation

German chamomile is a widely used herbal remedy taken mainly as a tea for calming, sleep, and digestive complaints. Early research suggests possible benefits for mild anxiety and some skin or digestive issues, but the evidence is limited and most uses are based on tradition rather than strong proof. It is generally well tolerated, but people allergic to ragweed or related plants and those who are pregnant should be cautious.
