Ginkgo and danicopan

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to danicopan

danicopan falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES — the group Ginkgo interacts with.

Theoretically, taking ginkgo with P-glycoprotein substrates might increase the levels and adverse effects of these substrates.
A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that using ginkgo leaf extract 120 mg orally three times daily for 14 days can increase levels of the P-glycoprotein substrate, talinolol, by 36% in healthy male individuals. However, single doses of ginkgo do not have the same effect.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the short version for danicopan (Voydeya), which doctors add on to treat a rare blood condition called PNH. Danicopan gets moved around and out of your body partly by a cellular pump called P-glycoprotein. Ginkgo may slow that pump down, so in theory a little more danicopan could linger in your bloodstream and its effects (and side effects like headache, nausea, or belly upset) could run a bit stronger.

I want to be honest that this is mostly theoretical. The human data comes from a different drug (talinolol), where regular ginkgo raised levels about 36%, while a single ginkgo dose did nothing. We don't have direct danicopan studies. It's a reasonable thing to run by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, rather than something to panic about.

About Ginkgo

What is Ginkgo?

Ginkgo
  • Memory and cognitive support
  • Age-related mental decline
  • Circulation problems
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
  • Dizziness or vertigo

Ginkgo is one of the world's most popular herbal supplements, mostly taken to support memory and circulation. The evidence for these uses is mixed and generally weak, and it is not proven to prevent memory loss or dementia. It is usually well tolerated in healthy adults, but it can thin the blood, so talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it.
