Nitrofurantoin falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Glucomannan interacts with.

Theoretically, glucomannan may decrease absorption of drugs taken orally.
Due to its viscosity and bulking effects, there is concern that glucomannan can decrease the absorption of oral drugs. A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that taking glyburide 2.5 mg plus glucomannan 3.9 grams with breakfast reduces plasma levels of glyburide when compared with breakfast and glyburide alone. In addition, animal research demonstrates this effect on amoxicillin, but shows increased absorption of metronidazole. This mouse model also demonstrates that metronidazole elimination is prolonged, but amoxicillin elimination is enhanced by 38%; glucomannan may also affect the distribution of some drugs. To avoid changes in absorption, take glucomannan 30-60 minutes after taking oral drugs.

Here's the gist: glucomannan is a thick soluble fiber that swells into a gel in your gut. That gel can grab onto pills and slow or reduce how much medicine actually gets absorbed into your body. With nitrofurantoin (Macrobid, Macrodantin), the worry is that less drug reaches your bloodstream and urine, where it needs to be to clear a urinary tract infection. If the antibiotic level drops, your UTI may not fully resolve, which can mean lingering burning, urgency, or a return of symptoms.

This is mostly a theoretical and timing concern, not a dangerous combo. The simple fix is spacing: take your nitrofurantoin first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before your glucomannan. Always check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them, especially while treating an active infection.

About Nitrofurantoin

What Is Nitrofurantoin Used For?

Brand names: Macrodantin, Furadantin, Furatoin, Macrobid

Nitrofurantoin is used to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by certain susceptible bacteria. The capsule forms (including Macrodantin) are indicated for UTIs due to susceptible strains of Escherichia coli, enterococci, Staphylococcus aureus, and certain strains of Klebsiella and Enterobacter species. Nitrofurantoin oral suspension (Furadantin) is indicated for adults and children 1 month of age and older for the same types of UTIs.

Nitrofurantoin is not used for kidney infections (pyelonephritis) or infections of the tissue around the kidney (perinephric abscesses). Because it works primarily in the urine and does not spread widely through body tissues, it may not fully clear the infection in some patients, and the UTI may return after treatment.
