Why this applies to Oxymorphone

Oxymorphone falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Glucomannan interacts with.

Theoretically, glucomannan may decrease absorption of drugs taken orally.
Due to its viscosity and bulking effects, there is concern that glucomannan can decrease the absorption of oral drugs. A small clinical study in healthy volunteers shows that taking glyburide 2.5 mg plus glucomannan 3.9 grams with breakfast reduces plasma levels of glyburide when compared with breakfast and glyburide alone. In addition, animal research demonstrates this effect on amoxicillin, but shows increased absorption of metronidazole. This mouse model also demonstrates that metronidazole elimination is prolonged, but amoxicillin elimination is enhanced by 38%; glucomannan may also affect the distribution of some drugs. To avoid changes in absorption, take glucomannan 30-60 minutes after taking oral drugs.

Here's the thing with glucomannan and your oral oxymorphone (like Opana). Glucomannan is a soluble fiber that turns into a thick gel in your stomach. That gel can physically trap or slow down pills you swallow around the same time, which may mean your body absorbs less of the medicine. For a pain reliever like oxymorphone, that could translate into weaker or less reliable pain control than you expect.

This concern is reasonable but the human evidence is limited, mostly seen with a diabetes drug, so we can't say exactly how much it affects oxymorphone. Oxymorphone is not a prodrug, so this is about getting less, not more. A simple fix is timing: take your oxymorphone first, then take glucomannan about 30 to 60 minutes later with plenty of water. Please run this past your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Oxymorphone Used For?

Brand names: Numorphan, Opana, Opana ER, Opana Injection

Oxymorphone Hydrochloride Tablets (immediate-release) are used to treat acute pain severe enough to require an opioid when other pain treatments are not enough. Oxymorphone Hydrochloride Extended-Release Tablets are used to manage severe, persistent pain that needs to be treated with a daily opioid over an extended period and when other options are inadequate.

Both forms are reserved for situations where non-opioid medicines or other approaches have not worked well enough. Oxymorphone Hydrochloride Extended-Release Tablets are not meant to be taken on an as-needed basis — they are for ongoing, around-the-clock pain management only.
