Rufinamide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) INDUCERS — the group Gravel Root interacts with.

Hepatotoxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PA) are substrates of cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4). Theoretically, drugs that induce CYP3A4 might increase the conversion of PAs to toxic metabolites. Some drugs that induce CYP3A4 include carbamazepine (Tegretol), phenobarbital, phenytoin (Dilantin), rifampin, rifabutin (Mycobutin), and others.

Here's the gist for Rufinamide (Banzel) and Gravel Root. This isn't about the herb changing your seizure medicine. It's the other way around. Gravel Root may contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids, plant compounds that can be hard on the liver. Rufinamide can mildly speed up an enzyme called CYP3A4, and the concern is that revving up that enzyme could turn more of those plant compounds into liver-damaging byproducts.

I want to be straight with you: this is theoretical, based only on lab data, not real-world cases. Still, Gravel Root has shaky safety evidence on its own, so I'd lean toward avoiding it. Please check with your doctor or pharmacist before combining the two.

Rufinamide — available as Banzel and generic rufinamide — is used as an add-on treatment (alongside other seizure medicines) for seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome (LGS), a severe type of epilepsy that usually begins in childhood and causes multiple types of seizures.

This indication applies to both the tablet and oral suspension forms, for pediatric patients 1 year of age and older as well as adults.
