Here's the thing to keep in mind with Farxiga (dapagliflozin) and guar gum. Because guar gum forms a thick gel in your stomach, it can grab onto medications and slow or reduce how much your body actually soaks up. With dapagliflozin, that could mean a bit less drug gets absorbed, so it may not lower your blood sugar quite as well as expected. Dapagliflozin is not a prodrug, so this is simply about getting less of it on board.

The good news is this is an easy fix. A simple gap helps a lot: take your dapagliflozin first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before your guar gum. If your sugars seem off, loop in your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

What Is Dapagliflozin Used For?

Brand name: Farxiga

Dapagliflozin is used for several serious conditions. It helps improve blood sugar control in adults and children aged 10 and older with type 2 diabetes (alongside diet and exercise). It also reduces the risk of hospitalization for heart failure in adults with type 2 diabetes who have established cardiovascular disease or multiple cardiovascular risk factors.

Farxiga (dapagliflozin) is additionally approved to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death, hospitalization, and urgent visits due to heart failure in adults with heart failure — and to slow the progression of chronic kidney disease, including reducing the risk of kidney failure and cardiovascular death, in adults with chronic kidney disease at risk of getting worse.
