Here's the simple version: guar gum is a thick, gel-forming fiber. When it sits in your stomach and gut, it can grab onto things passing through and slow how quickly they get absorbed. Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant you swallow, so in theory that gel could slow or slightly lower how much of it gets into your system, which might make it work a bit less well for calming your cough.

The good news is this is a mild, manageable concern. Most of the evidence comes from other oral drugs like metformin and penicillin, not dextromethorphan specifically, so it's more of a 'play it safe' situation. An easy fix is spacing them out: take your cough medicine first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before your guar gum. If you have questions, your pharmacist can help you time things.

Dextromethorphan temporarily relieves cough due to minor throat and bronchial irritation, such as the kind that comes with the common cold or breathing in irritants. It also helps reduce the urge to cough so you — or your child — can get to sleep.

Some products, including CVS Long Acting Cough and Premier Value Tussin Cough oral liquids, are also indicated to help loosen phlegm (mucus) and thin bronchial secretions to help drain the airways.
