Here's the thing to keep in mind with guar gum and your losartan (Cozaar). Guar gum is a thick, gel-forming fiber, and when it sits in your stomach it can grab onto a pill that's in there at the same time and slow down how much of it gets absorbed. With losartan, that could mean a bit less of the medicine reaches your bloodstream, so your blood pressure might not be controlled as well as usual.

The good news is this is easy to work around. The simple fix is timing: take your losartan first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before your guar gum supplement. Food-sized amounts of fiber usually aren't a concern, but concentrated supplements are. Check with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

Guar gum is a soluble, gel-forming fiber from the guar bean that may modestly help with cholesterol, blood sugar, and bowel regularity. It is generally safe in food amounts, but concentrated supplements can cause gas, bloating, and a risk of throat or gut blockage if not taken with enough water. Always take it with plenty of fluid and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Losartan

What Is Losartan Used For?

Brand name: Cozaar

Losartan tablets — available as branded Cozaar and several generic products — are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children 6 years and older. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks. Losartan tablets are also used to reduce the risk of stroke in people with high blood pressure who also have left ventricular hypertrophy (an enlarged left side of the heart). Note: evidence suggests this stroke-risk benefit may not apply to Black patients.

Losartan tablets are additionally approved to protect the kidneys in people with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and signs of kidney damage (diabetic nephropathy). Arbli, the oral suspension form, shares these same approved uses.
