Here's the simple version: guar gum forms a thick gel in your stomach, and that gel can grab onto your metformin and slow down how much of it your gut absorbs. Metformin isn't a prodrug, so this isn't about activating it. It just means less of the dose may actually get into your system if you take the two at the same time.

What could that look like? Slightly higher blood sugar than you'd expect, since your metformin may be working a bit weaker. The fix is easy timing: studies suggest taking guar gum about 30 to 60 minutes after your metformin. Don't change your dose on your own. Just run the timing plan by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Here's the simple version: guar gum is a thick, gel-forming fiber, and when it sits in your gut it can slow down and partly block how much metformin your body soaks up. Metformin isn't a prodrug, so this isn't about activating it. It just means a bit less of the drug may actually get absorbed, which could make your blood sugar control a little weaker than expected.

In a small study of healthy people, guar gum slowed metformin's absorption. The practical worry is reduced effectiveness, not added side effects. If you take both, a good habit is to separate them by a couple of hours. Before changing anything, check with your pharmacist or doctor, especially if you watch your readings closely.
